Fountain and Aerator Service and Equipment

Aeration and fountains are an important part of a healthy pond.  Ponds can become problematic when the water is not being circulated.  Stagnant water produces an ideal environment for mosquitoes, weeds, and algae to thrive in a pond.  Aerators and fountains keep the water moving.  However, these units do differ from each other and it is important to know the difference before purchasing a unit. 

Fountains are a focal point in most ponds.  Fountains shoot up to 15-30 feet in the air depending on the model and spray pattern.  These units move water and increase oxygen levels on the surface, but leave deep spots in the pond unchanged.  Fountains plug into an electric source on the shoreline.  The cable runs from the fountain float to the electric source.  There are several eye hooks on the float to anchor the float in place. 

If fish health and oxygen levels are a major concern, then you may want to consider an aerator.  Unlike fountains, the aerator diffuser sits on the pond floor and pushes oxygenated air to the surface of the water.  Aerators create a ripple effect on the surface of the water.  These units have two lines that come off the pump (electrical cable and airline).  The pump sits on the shore line and has 6 feet of electrical cable.  Therefore, it is important that your electrical source is close to the edge of the pond.  The airline will runs from the pump on the shore to the diffuser on the pond floor and should be anchored.
